Our History

The founding institution, Dickinson Business School, was established in 1921 by Harold R. Frazell to train typists in Kansas City, Missouri. A secretarial program was added in 1953 and a new shorthand system was developed. By the late nineteen fifties this system was widely accepted in the Kansas City area and became known as "Dickinson Shorthand."

In the early 1970s, a Missouri corporation comprised of two local educators purchased the school. The school’s educational program was then modified to emphasize individualized, self-paced instruction.

Mr. James Miller purchased the school in 1978 and continued to improve its educational programs. In late December 1981, Mr. Lawrence D. Earle purchased an interest in the institution, thus broadening the financial base of the school.

By August 1982, the Accrediting Commission of Independent Colleges and Schools accredited the institution. Thereafter, the school expanded its operation substantially, adding additional main campuses and branches.

The San Antonio school, approved by the Accrediting Commission of Independent Colleges and Schools to operate as a branch of the main campus, located in Kansas City, Missouri, was approved by the Texas Education Agency on December 13, 1983 and began its classes on January 3, 1984. In 1988, the school applied for and was granted main campus status by the Accrediting Commission of Independent Colleges and Schools.

On December 20, 1989, Mr. Lawrence D. Earle acquired all outstanding stock of the school from his partner, Mr. James Miller and changed the institution’s name to Career Point Business School. In 1997, the school underwent a transition to competency-based training and assessment. The Board changed the school’s name from Career Point Business School to Career Point Institute on March 27, 2001 then changed it to its current name Career Point College on November 15, 2007.

In January 2007, Career Point College began offering Associate in Applied Science Degrees in Administrative Assisting, Legal Administrative Assisting and Network Support Specialist. In January 2008, it added the Associates in Applied Science Degrees in Medical Assistant and Medical Administrative Assistant. Two months later, the AAS in Accounting Technology was added.
